Storm Coming in on Arkansas White River

Arkansas White River is not to far from where I live. I visit at least once a week this wonderful calming river. Painted from a Photo taken last spring. I am really longing for that kind of weather again so I just had to paint this. I could almost smell the rain while I painted.

"Old Fashion Roses" Oil Painting on Canvas by M Ashley

I painted a lot of roses for years, so many that I stopped and started painting landscapes. It feels much like painting an old friend now.

"House on the White River Cotter Arkansas" Original Oil Painting on Canvas

This house sets across the river in Cotter Arkansas at the Big Springs put in ramp. The bluffs rise up in the back of this house. This time of the year you can see parts of the bluffs through the trees, but during spring and summer it's lush with green. The river is usually gently rolling along unless they have opened the gates on the dam at Bull Shoals, as is the case on this particular day.

"Antique Glass Bottles"

This is a group of my favorite old bottles. Each one a different color, texture and personality, very much like a portrait, but they don't move, need to eat or the other things! They are just so much fun to paint. There is one that has sand and shells, another has seeds, that dark one has some sort of thick black stuff. They have bubbles, scratches, are colored and etched with age, weather and the sun

"Full Moon over Mountain Home"

This is a street heading into town on a wonderful fall night. The Moon was so bright you could drive without the lights on! Of course my passengers screamed with fear when I did. Painting from a photo reference and a vivid memory!

"Treasures From the Sea" Original Oil Painting by M. Ashley

They are treasures from a summer at the beach. The old Blue bottle has the sand with the tiny shells, pieces of sea glass, rocks and and the dried sea fish that is forever preserved. If you happen to be on the beach at around 6am, as the tide is going out, you will find treasures like this waiting for you! On one trip to Gasparilla Island in Florida, the shells were knee deep in places.

"The Treasure Box" Oil on Gessoed Hardboard 8x10"

A little tin box with a little boy's treasures from a summer filled with wonderful finds. The box is an old tin box with chipped paint. There are two marbles a broken Robin's egg, and a tiny basket that Gramps made from a walnut shell. Inside is a small glass jar, a rock from a camping trip on the river, and other mysterious wonders.

"Old Stoneware Jug and Egg"

This is a old handmade jug I found at a tag sale long ago. I love the drippy glaze and natural shape it has. My setup for this was a single 40w overhead light and the egg is real and rather translucent but picking up the light shining on the table.

"Bluffs on the Buffalo River"

This is an awesome river! It's light is magical and sounds of the river are calming. If you have never been you should take a trip to float it or just spend the day beside it. This is a small study done with a pallet knife.

"Empty Nest and Robin's Egg"

They work so hard to make such a perfect little home and then when the babies are grown and fly off on their own, the parents go on vacation, and the perfect little nest, adorn with baby feathers, is abandon.

"Old Bottles and Robins Egg" Original Oil Painting

A couple of old bottles surrounded by seeds, nuts, berries and a Robin's egg. I have shelves full of these old bottles and when I'm in the mood to paint glass. The largest one is probably an old whisky bottle that was dug up somewhere around Chicago. It has a film of calcium deposit on the inside that makes the blue glass really glow under overhead lighting.

"Nardello Italian Heirloom Peppers"

I have go to the Farmer's Market on the square every Saturday morning now to buy these wonderful peppers all tangled up in baskets! They hold back the really gnarly ones for me. They have to be painted quickly because they start turning in color and shape!
The Reds used here are Magenta, Cadmium Vermilion and a touch of Cadmium Orange.
